The tennis world will go through a thrilling week as the ATP brings Sofia Open 2022 into action. The Sofia Open is a professional men’s tennis tournament played under the ATP World Tour 250 series.
It takes place on indoor hard courts at the Arena Armeec in Sofia, Bulgaria. The first edition was held in 2016 and Roberto Bautista Agut bagged the inaugural title. This year, the 7th edition will start on September 26 and run through to October 2.
Jannik Sinner, Pablo Carreno Busta, Grigor Dimitrov, and Lorenzo Musetti are the top four seed players and have received a bye to the second round. Defending champion Jannik Sinner and home favorite Grigor Dimitrov will headline the top half of the draw. Jack Draper, Nikoloz Bailashivili, Holger Rune, and Fabio Fognini are some other notable players to watch in the contest.
Defending Champion: Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner won the Sofia Open for the past two consecutive years. His achievement in 2020 marked his maiden career title.
The 21-year-old has bagged six ATP titles since turning professional in 2018. He ranked his career-high world No. 9 by the ATP on 1 November 2021. His Sofia Open title made him the youngest ATP title-holder since 2008 and the youngest player to win five titles since Novak Djokovic in 2007. He became the first teenage ATP 500 champion by winning the Citi Open last year. His current form suggests that the Italian deserves to defend it once again this year. He is also the top seed in this year’s edition.
