Tuivasa’s birthplace is Sydney, Australia. He was born to an Indigenous Australian (Wiradjuri) mother and a Samoan father. He was raised in the western Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt with siblings. He played rugby league in his youth. In 2010, He was signed by the professional Sydney Roosters rugby league club. But he gave up playing the sport.

Early career:
In 2012, Tuivasa made his MMA debut in Australia. He fought occasionally with all of his wins ending in knockouts over the years. He faced Australian former rugby league competitor John Hopoat in the Newcastle arena at Combat 8:02, the second Combat 8 event, and won the fight. He fought kickboxer Peter Graham at Combat 8:03 and lost the fight.
Ultimate Fighting Championship:
In 2016, Tuivasa signed a four-fight contract with the UFC. But he did not fight for a knee injury in 2016.
IN 2017, Tuivasa made his UFC debut against Rashad Coulter at UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs. Tybura and won the fight. He became the first indigenous Australian to win a UFC fight and also earned him the Performance of the Night bonus.
In 2018, Tuivasa fought Cyril Asker at UFC 221 and won the fight. He entered position #15 in UFC’s official rankings for heavyweight fighters.
In 2018, Tuivasa again signed a four-fight contract with UFC. Tuivasa fought Andrei Arlovski at UFC 225 and won the fight. Then he fought the former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos at UFC Fight Night 142 and lost the fight.
In 2019, Tuivasa fought Blagoy Ivanov at UFC 238 and lost the fight. Then he fought Sergey Spivak at UFC 243 and lost the fight.
In 2020, Tuivasa was scheduled to fight Jarjis Danho at UFC 251. But Dana White, the president of UFC announced that this event was postponed to a future date. Tuivasa fought Stefan Struve at UFC 254 and won the fight.
In 2021, Tuivasa was scheduled to fight Don’Tale Mayes at UFC on ESPN 21. But Mayes was removed from the fight during the week. Mayes was replaced by promotional newcomer Harry Hunsucker. So Tuivasa fought Hunsucker and won the fight via technical knockout in round one.
Then he fought Greg Hardy at UFC 264 and won the fight. From the fight, Taivasa earned the Performance of the Night award. Then he was scheduled to fight Walt Harris at UFC 267 but Harris pulled out of the bout. Then Tuivasa was scheduled to fight Augusto Sakai at UFC Fight Night 198 but due to visa issues for Tuivasa, the bout was excluded. It was rescheduled at UFC 269 and won the fight. From this win, he earned his third Performance of the Night bonus award.
In 2022, Tuivasa fought Derrick Lewis at UFC 271 and won the fight. From this win, he earned a Performance of the Night bonus award.
Tuivasa is scheduled to fight former Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane at UFC Fight Night 209.
