Early Career:
Blaydes was born in Naperville but raised in nearby Chicago along with his four other siblings. He began his wrestling life for the De La Salle Institute. He also compiled an undefeated 44–0 record. After his four years, he compiled a record of 95–18 with 121 takedowns. He also played football for De La Salle. Then he earned a full wrestling scholarship to Northern Illinois University. As a redshirt freshman at NIU, he transferred to Harper College. There Blaydes won the NJCAA National Championship as a redshirt sophomore. Then he began fighting in amateur mixed martial arts. He left school to pursue a career in MMA. He was an IKF amateur champion.
In 2014, Blaydes compiled an 8–0 amateur record. Then he turned professional. Then he went 5–0, with all wins via TKO. Then He signed with the UFC.
Ultimate Fighting Championship:
In 2016, he made his debut fight against Francis Ngannou at UFC fight night 86. But he lost the fight. Next, he faced Cody East at UFC Fight Night 96. He won the fight via TKO in the second round.
In 2017, he faced Adam Milstead at UFC Fight Night 104. After dominating the action throughout the first round, Blaydes won the fight via TKO after Milstead sustained a knee injury. But the result was changed to a No Contest because Blaydes tested positive for marijuana. Then he faced Daniel Omielańczuk at UFC 213 and he won the fight by unanimous decision. Then he faced Alexey Oleynik at UFC 217 and he won the fight via TKO due to a doctor stoppage.
In 2018, Blaydes faced Mark Hunt at UFC 221 and he won the fight via unanimous decision. Then he faced Alistair Overeem at UFC 225. He won the fight via TKO due to elbows and this win earned him the Performance of the Night bonus. He again faced Francis Ngannou in the main event at UFC Fight Night 141 and he lost the fight via TKO early into the first round.
In 2019, Blaydes faced Justin Willis at UFC Fight Night 148 and he won the fight via unanimous decision. Then he faced Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC 242 and won the fight via TKO in the second round.
In 2020, Blaydes faced Junior dos Santos at UFC Fight Night 166 and won the fight via technical knockout in the second round. Then he faced Alexander Volkov at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs Volkov and won the fight via unanimous decision. Then he was scheduled to face Derrick Lewis at the UFC on ESPN: Blaydes vs Lewis. During that Covid-19 pandemic season, he tested positive for coronavirus and the bout was scrapped.
In 2021, this pair was rescheduled at UFC Fight Night 185 and Blaydes lost the fight via knockout in the second round. After fighting out his contract, he became a free agent and signed a new four-fight deal with the UFC. He faced Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC 266 and he won the fight via unanimous decision. Then He faced Chris Daukaus at UFC on ESPN 33 and he won the fight via TKO early in the second round.
