Andrey Rublev wins the 2022 Gijon Open as he cruises past Sebastian Korda in the final, beating him in straight sets.
Rublev, the current world no. 9, entered Gijón, Spain as the 1st seed of the tournament. As the sole representative of the top 10 in the field, he was the clear favorite to win the whole thing in all of the pre-tournament analyses.
The path to the grand final for the Russian was not smooth sailing. In the very first round, he struggled against Ilya Ivashka before beating him in three sets. After powering through Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals in straight sets, he set up the most interesting clash in the semi-finals against Dominic Thiem.
However, the match against the former US Open Champion turned out to be rather one-sided. Rublev took the match with relative ease, beating him 6-4, 6-4. The stage for the grand final was set with Rublev and Korda clashing for the Bijon Crown.
Korda, himself had a fine run in the tournament as he defeated prominent tennis stars like Andy Murray and Bautista Agut. Korda reached the grand final of the Gijon Open hoping to win the 2nd ATP title of his career and the first of this season.
His hope, however, was short-lived as he could barely put up the fight against Rublev. The 24-year-old world no. 9 won the match convincingly in straight sets without getting broken.

Rublev took the first set 6-2. He broke his opponent twice in set 1. Once in the 4th game and then in the 8th one to close out the set. The 2nd set was identical to the first. Rublev hammered his way to the win as he easily held his serve after breaking Korda early in the set.
With this win, Andrey Rublev has won his 12th career title. His 4th in 2022. This win gets him within the reach of qualifying for the year-end ATP Finals in Turin.
