Rory McIlroy has signed up to play at the BMW PGA Championship. The four-time major winner will return to Wentworth on the DP World Tour for the first time since 2019. The sign up gives the PGA tour a boost during its civil war against the LIV golf Series.
McIlroy’s decision to play in the PGA Championship comes at a crucial time. After Cameron Smith’s winning the 150th British Open in fashion last week, the gossip was on whether the Australian would be joining the LIV Golf Series. Meanwhile, Henrik Stenson surprised the golf world by signing up for it.
A bunch of major winners have signed up to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf series but McIlroy, the world number three, has chosen the other way.
“I look forward to competing again at the BMW PGA Championship. It’s an event I always love playing. The West Course has been good to me in the past, and the fans are incredibly supportive. I’ve had a consistent year so far and having a chance to win again at the iconic Wentworth would help my season-long campaign.” said McIlroy.
The BMW PGA Championship will unveil its curtain on September 8 (Thursday) and will run through to September 11 (Sunday) this year.
