Rory McIlroy claimed the 2022 FedEx Cup title in PGA Tour Championship. He beat world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im on Sunday.
McIlroy made an astonishing comeback at East Lake on Sunday to claim the title. He was six strokes behind Scheffler. However, he managed to finish with a 4-under 66 to overtake the four-time champion. McIlroy was awarded a record $18 million prize money. Sungjae Im also made a spectacular comeback to finish second, sharing the position with Scheffler.
The nail-biting contest between two top class players for the biggest PGA Tour glory was quite enjoyable. Scheffler never trailed until the 70th hole and made only one birdie in a 73. As McIlroy took full advantage of it, he lost the 6-stroke lead in the first seven holes. Meanwhile, the new champion made a 31-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead.
With this, the Irish also became the first player to uphold the title three times. The previous two wins came in 2016 and in 2019. Golf legend Tiger Woods won twice- in 2007 and in 2009.
