The Acciona Open de Espana 2022 presented by Madrid is often called ‘Open de España.’ Formerly, it was named the Spanish Open. The event was founded in 1912 and has been a part of the European Tour since 1972. This year, it will take place at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, located in Madrid, the capital of Spain.
The world’s top-class golfers will compete in the tournament. Madrid Trophy Promotion has taken charge of organizing the event since 2019. The total prize money is worth €1,750,000, which will be distributed among the top players in the contest.
The course will feature Ryder Cup hero Tommy Fleetwood, who owns five DP World Tour titles. World No. 6 Jon Rahm will participate and aim to lift the title for the third time after winning back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. Other notable names who will compete in the event are Brandon Stone, Min Woo Lee, Chris Wood, Thomas Bjorn, and local heroes like Pablo Larrazábal, Jorge Campillo, Nacho Elvira, and many more.
Defending Champion: Rafa Cabrera-Bello
Home favorite Rafael Cabrera-Bello claimed the title of the Open de España last year. He secured victory over his fellow Spaniard opponent Adri Arnaus with a birdie on the first extra hole.
Cabrera-Bello tied with Billy Horschel to share the ninth spot at the BMW PGA Championship, held at Wentworth Club in England last month. He currently ranks 33rd in the DP World Tour rankings, however, 183rd in the Official World Golf Ranking. The 38-year-old has bagged seven professional titles in his kit, including four from the European Tour.
