FIFA just confirmed a new match ball for the coming matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. With only four matches left, the new ball titled “Al Hilm” will be used throughout the rest of tournament.
Developed by Adidas, Al Hilm is the successor of their previously designed Al Rihla. Al Rihla was a very innovative ball that introduced features like position tracking and improved VAR systems. The upcoming Al Hilm ball is supposed to improve upon those existing features.
Al Hilm translates to “the dream” from Arabic. The new ball features a gold base design with triangular pattern of red sheds. According to the official statements of FIFA, the gorgeous new design represents the deserts surrounding the host nation’s capital, Doha, the national flag of Qatar and the color of the iconic football World Cup trophy.
During the unveiling event Adidas General Manager Nick Craggs said, “Al Hilm represents a beacon of light on the power of sport and football to bring the world together.” He added, “Millions will tune in from almost every country around the globe, united by their passion for the game. We wish all teams involved in the final stages of the tournament the best of luck.”
The director of football technology & innovation at FIFA, Johannes Holzmuller said, “With the development of the connected ball technology, Adidas made it possible that an additional important layer of information is available to the video match officials.” “The data from the ball unlocks new insights for storytelling around the unique moments on the pitch at this World Cup,” he added.
To maintain the environment friendly nature of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar, Al Hilm was designed to be as eco-friendly as possible. Water based inks and glues were used to design the ball. The beautiful ball design is being praised positively by football fans and critiques worldwide.
With the completion of quarterfinals, only four teams are left to compete for this year’s FIFA World Cup trophy. The semifinal stage begins tomorrow with the high-voltage match between Argentina and Croatia at Lusail Stadium.
