Since the Jurgen Klopp days, Borussia Dortmund failed to scathe Bayern’s domestic dominance. Ironically, they just fell behind a year in, year out. They have just ended one of the most underperformed seasons in recent history. They were the Bundesliga runners-up, however, the difference with the league champion is a whopping 15 points. They were knocked out from the UCL in the 1st round after being 3rd behind Ajax and Sporting CP.
That 3rd placed finish allowed them to compete in the Europa League nevertheless, they failed to overcome the 1st KO round clash. Rangers defeated them by a margin of 4-6. After a horrible trophyless season, the club hierarchies intend to shake things up. So far, the intention is evident in the transfer activity. Here, we’ll take a look at the business done by the German club.
Incomings:
Sebastien Haller: The club sold two top forwards this season, to fill the void they acted almost immediately and snatched Ajax’s Centre forward Haller for a fee of €31 million. After a great season with the Eredivisie side, it’s a bargain deal for sure as the 28-year-old towering striker proved his ability in both the league and the European competition.
Karim Adeyemi: Talented forward Adeyemi was the first signing for the club in this transfer window. The young and exciting striker was monitored by many top clubs nonetheless Dortmund functioned promptly and secured the service of one of the most sought-after performers for just €30 million from RB Salzburg.
Nico Schlotterbeck: Dortmund found that much of their underwhelming performance was because of the poor defensive unit and to strengthen that side, they signed Nico from another German side SC Freiburg. The 22-year-old was a regular starter for his former club and everyone wants him to justify his €20 million price tag by showing his class in Signal Eduna Park.
Salih Ozcan: Borussia brought Ozcan from the Bundesliga side FC Koln. This time the fee is only €5 million. However, he’ll surely help the club to bolster the midfield.
Niklas Sule: Sule spent a couple of years at Bayern Munich. His contract expired at the end of the last season and he opted to play for Dortmund rather than stay at Allianz Arena. It’s a great deal for the club as the 26-year-old has a huge experience in Bundesliga and he came for nothing at the same time.
Marcel Lotka: Dortmund signed young goalkeeper Lotka from Hertha BSC. He doesn’t cost any penny also.
Alexander Meyer: Dortmund signed another Goalkeeper for free to create depth in their keeping position. The 31-year-old was bought from the 2nd division of the Bundesliga.
Departures:
Erling Haaland: The most important member leaves the Signal Eduna Park this summer is the Norwegian prodigy, Erling Haaland. Manchester City reportedly activated its release clause of €51 million and the player followed in his father’s footsteps.
Axel Witsel: The Belgian international was an integral part of the club for so many years. However, his contract came to an end and he left the club for free and signed for Atletico Madrid.
Steffen Tigges: Dortmund sold the centre forward for €1.50 million to FC Koln.
Roman Burki and Marwin Hitz both are goalkeepers and left the club after seeing their contracts and sailed to MLS & FC Basel respectively.
It’s a busy summer for the German club and the manager Edin Terzic will try to manage his players properly and find the formula for winning again.
