Malaysia Open is one of the oldest Southeast Asian badminton events. Since its inauguration 86 years ago, the event has been held annually in various locations of Malaysia. The event is currently titled “Petronas Malaysia Open” due to sponsorships.
The 2023 iteration of Malaysia Open is scheduled to be held in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The BWF World Tour Super 1000 event featuring $1.25 million prize pool will run for 6 days. In addition to the purse pool, it will feature over 40,000 BWF ranking points.
Danish badminton player Viktor Axelsen is the leading seed of this year’s Malaysia Open. He has been leading the BWF singles international standings since last December. Axelsen is also the 2022 World Champion, which is his second world championship title. With 6 additional world tour titles in 2022, he won his career second Male Player of the Year award.
Lee Zii Jia is the second seed at Malaysia Open. The Malaysian is also 2nd in the BWF singles standings. Last year, he won the Manila singles and Selangor doubles. Additionally, he acquired the Asian Championship title at Philippines event too. He was banned by the BAM for a short period. Which was quickly lifted due to negative reception of fans and international players towards BAM over the ban.
